Hi! I’m Rachel the owner of Connecting Seams.
I’ve been sewing for close to 30 years. It all started in high school drama class making my costumes. When I had my 1st child I really got into quilting and making baby stuff. From there I started making bags and pajama pants. In 2019 I worked part time with a fashion designer, occasionally for a gardening company, and part time sewing in a factory.
When the covid shutdown happened in 2020, I was able to work from home because I had an industrial sewing machine that could handle heavy materials (I really liked sewing denim). I quickly learned that there were quite a few companies that could use someone to work part time for them from home, and they were willing to pay me piecework. This new found job, helped me be home more for my kids! Not only was I home more; I was able to put my work down at anytime and help them with their school work, I could eat all my meals with them, and we could go on more adventures together.
Since 2020, I have continued to sew for multiple companies and occasionally get so much work that I have to hire on help. In 2022 I started teaching sewing classes for a local school and a non profit that works with refugees. People have asked if I would teach sewing lessons for people other than the groups I’m currently teaching with. So, I am expanding to teach sewing lessons for individuals and small groups.
Something I’ve noticed that happens when you sew for multiple companies, is that you see a lot of wasted fabric. I’ve started asking for the scraps so that I can make bags to sell from them. I’ll be starting to attend more craft shows to sell these bags that I just love making.
